A Little Kink for Halloween
I’m Andrew Pullen, and I write about BDSM, fetish and Shibari for Adultsmart. If you’ve picked a Halloween costume with handcuffs, a cape or a particularly bossy character in mind, you might already have an idea you’d like to bring into the bedroom. The next step is finding out whether your partner likes that idea too.
You might be curious about wearing a blindfold, trying wrist cuffs or letting your partner take the lead for a while. You can bring up any of those without knowing every BDSM term. “I’d like to try this. What do you think?” is a perfectly good place to start.
For your first attempt, choose one thing you’re both interested in and talk through how you’ll try it. A costume can be fun to stay in character with, but you should still feel comfortable asking a question, changing your mind or stopping.
This guide covers that conversation, choosing restraints, trying a blindfold and giving your Halloween costume a role. We’ll also look at the Deluxe Steel Bondage Wrist Cuffs in the restraints section, before finishing with a check-in and a few common beginner questions.
Agree on the Scene Before You Start
Before anyone reaches for the cuffs, have a conversation about what you both want to try. “I like the idea of you taking the lead tonight” is a useful opening, but explain what that means to you. Your partner might be imagining something quite different.
For your first Halloween BDSM scene, pick one activity and talk it through while you’re both sober. That could be wearing a blindfold or trying wrist restraints. Agree on what will happen, what is off limits and how you’ll stop. You can keep the conversation casual and still be clear.
- What are we trying? Name the activity and agree on who will do what.
- What is off limits? Discuss any touch, words or roles either person does not want. Nobody needs to justify a limit.
- How will we pause or stop? You might use “yellow” for a pause and check-in, and “red” to stop. Agree on a clear nonverbal signal too if either person may be unable to speak.
Keep checking in once you begin. A safeword is useful, but ordinary “no” and “stop” still count. Stop straight away if your partner asks, seems distressed or cannot respond clearly. They can change their mind about something they agreed to earlier.
The costume doesn’t make the rules
Playing a bossy character can be part of the fun. The person wearing the costume still needs to listen, respect the agreed limits and stop when asked.
Cuffs, Comfort and Clear Limits
Your Halloween BDSM scene can be as soft or as hard as you both want, within the limits you’ve agreed. Some people like padded cuffs and a playful tone. Others prefer solid restraints and a partner who takes a firmer lead. Talk about what appeals to you both, then choose the equipment to suit.
The material is part of that choice. Padding provides cushioning against the skin, while steel gives a more rigid feel. Before using either, try the fastening and release together. If keys are needed, keep them within easy reach. You should know how to get the cuffs off before putting them on.
Keep your partner supported in a comfortable position and check the fit throughout. Release immediately if there is pain, numbness, tingling or a change in hand colour or temperature. Stay with anyone you’ve restrained, and never use wrist cuffs to carry body weight or for suspension.
Harder play doesn’t mean tighter cuffs
A firmer role or a harder material can change the mood. Increasing pressure around someone’s wrists is not a safe way to increase the intensity.
Prefer Something Harder?
If solid steel is more your style, check out the Deluxe Steel Bondage Wrist Cuffs. They suit the look of a commanding Halloween character, with a rigid feel for those who prefer metal restraints. Check the sizing and release instructions before choosing them.
A Blindfold Changes the Mood
You’ve seen your partner in their Halloween costume. A blindfold lets you try a different part of the scene: listening to their voice and letting them guide an activity you’ve agreed on. For some people, that’s more appealing than cuffs.
My suggestion is to try it with your hands free first. Choose a blindfold that feels comfortable, leaves your nose and mouth uncovered and comes off easily. Settle somewhere supported, then give yourself a moment to decide whether you like wearing it.
Keep the First Try Simple
Soft fabric
Try a smooth piece of fabric brushed over a forearm. Ask whether your partner enjoys it before changing the touch.
Fingertips
Use familiar touch on an agreed area, such as the hands or shoulders. Let your partner tell you what feels good.
A change of pace
Alternate between the touches you’ve chosen, with pauses to check in. You can vary the order while keeping to what you agreed.
Which Side of the Blindfold Suits You?
Wearing It
You can ask for more of a touch you like, request a change or take the blindfold off. You still have a say throughout.
Taking the Lead
Keep talking, listen to the answers and stay close. Guiding the activity means paying attention to the person who’s trusting you.
Swap roles if you’re both interested. You might enjoy one side much more than the other, which is useful to know when planning your next Halloween BDSM scene.
Try the BDStyle Sinful Blindfold
The Diamond Patterned Sinful Blindfold by BDStyle has a soft vinyl exterior and smooth PU backing. Its diamond pattern adds a finishing touch to your Halloween outfit. Check that it sits comfortably before you start; afterward, wipe it with a damp cloth and let it air dry.
Give Your Halloween Costume a Role
Roleplay turns your Halloween costume into a character you can act out with your partner, with a story and a reason for the two of you to interact.
| Character | The Scene |
|---|---|
| Wicked Witch | Casts curses and takes what she wants. Her partner plays the person under her spell, following the instructions you’ve chosen for the scene. A spellbook prop can hold her demands. |
| Good Witch | Uses love magic to charm her partner. Write a pretend spell with an action for each line, using praise and affection as the rewards. |
| Vampire | Receives a willing visitor at the castle. The visitor has come to ask a favour, and the vampire names their price. A written invitation can set up the story before you meet. |
| Devil | Offers a tempting bargain in return for a reward. Write a pretend contract together, then act out the deal with one partner playing the devil and the other making the request. |
Crafty Cutie Witch Costume
For the witch role, try the Crafty Cutie Costume by Leg Avenue: a purple-and-black outfit with a satin dress and lace trim. Check the size guide and current options before ordering.
Finish With a Check-In
Aftercare is the time you take to look after yourselves once the scene finishes. It matters for both partners, including the person who took the lead. What helps one person settle might be quite different from what the other wants.
Get Comfortable First
Remove the cuffs or blindfold, put any equipment aside and ask what your partner needs. That might be water, a blanket, a cuddle or some quiet time. Ask before assuming they want touch, and say what you need too.
“Would you like me close, or would you prefer some space?”
A simple question gives your partner room to answer honestly. You don’t have to fill every quiet moment.
Decide What You’d Keep or Change
What worked? Name something specific: the character, the blindfold or how your partner spoke to you.
What would you change? You might want a shorter scene, a different role or to leave one activity out.
You can have that conversation later if either of you needs time. Trying something once also doesn’t mean it has to become part of your usual sex life.

Frequently Asked Questions – Halloween BDSM
Does Halloween BDSM have to involve pain?
No. You might enjoy roleplay, agreed instructions or wearing a blindfold without wanting pain at all. Choose the parts that appeal to you both. There is no requirement to make a scene harder or more intense.
Can we try BDSM roleplay without restraints?
Yes. A character, an agreed leading role and a few instructions can be enough. You can try the witch, vampire or devil ideas using costumes and props, with both partners free to move.
Should beginners choose padded cuffs or steel cuffs?
Padded cuffs provide cushioning, while steel cuffs have a more rigid feel and less give. Beginners may find padded restraints easier to get used to. With either type, check the sizing, follow the instructions and practise the release before use.
Does the person wearing the costume have to take the lead?
No. The outfit does not decide the role. Your witch might be learning spells from their partner, or your vampire might be following the visitor’s requests. Choose who leads according to what you both enjoy.
What if we feel awkward or start laughing during roleplay?
Take a break, laugh together or use your normal voices for a while. You can drop an awkward line, change the story or finish the scene. Neither person has to keep performing just because you planned it.
