Sexual Health
So a week or two ago we got a good lesson in store in terms of lubes, specifically Intimate Earth’s Defense Protection Glide. Now this was a great lesson about how Intimate Earth has healing and protection properties which includes (but not limited to): helping thrush, preventing thrush, and protecting against HPV. Sexual health is vital and must be maintained with quality products.
While these points absolutely excited me because there are so many women out there who suffer constant thrush, and having an extra layer of protection for HPV – which is the virus that causes cervical cancer – I’m a sceptic at heart and this sounded very *essential oils will cure my life*, plus I’m a sucker for a good science deep dive… And I’m talking hours long.
So here’s how my journey went from “That sounds fake” to “Oh my god, Algae is a miracle”
Have You Heard Of Intimate Earth?
Now Intimate Earth is great for the fact that it’s Vegan and cruelty-free, including great organic ingredients, being glycerin free (glycerin is okay in the right formulas, but that’s rambling for another day!), and paraben free; but these aren’t the winners for me. Defense Protection Glide has 2 ingredients that get me very excited now and those are Guava Bark, and Carrageenan.

You Can’t Miss The Guava Bark!
We’ll start with Guava Bark, this plays an enormous part in traditional medicines across the globe, the study I read was specifically related to rural India, due to many factors the struggle to access good health care means many are still using traditional medicines to this day.
Studies have been able to show that Guava Bark is effective in fighting:
- Gastrointestinal Issues
- Malaria
- Respiratory Infections
- Oral/Dental Infections
- Skin Infections
- Diabetes
- Cancer
- Pain
- Fevers
- Liver Problems
- Kidney Problems
And on top of all that it has amazing antimicrobial abilities having efficacy against 34 bacterial species, 19 fungal species, 6 protozoal (little single cell organisms) species, and 4 viruses.
How Does This Change My Lube?
“But what does this have to do with my lube?” Great question! Due to the vaginal being such a delicate little thing, you can look at it the wrong way and bam a little bit of thrush/yeast infection has begun, this ingredient is exciting due to it’s ability to kill off the overgrowth of the fungus that creates them (yes, it’s really a fungus, it naturally occurs but thrush/yeast infections happen when there is an overgrowth)… There is so much history behind guava bark being used as a douche, treating BV and thrush, being used in a Sitz Bath for post pregnancy or any kind of relief of pain around the genitals.
As someone who has had her fair share this ingredient makes me do a little happy dance thinking about how good this can be for all vagina havers out there. Not only is there years of traditional medicine showing the uses, but for those skeptics like myself there is studies dating back to the 1940s that show it’s effectiveness (not saying years of culture and traditional medicine means nothing if not backed by western sciences, I just like to know the ins and outs of everything, like the nosey person I am).
What Exactly Is Carrageenan?
Here we are moving onto Carrageenan, I had no idea what this was until I did my research (couldn’t even pronounce it, but that’s just the blonde in me coming through). This ingredient is derived from red edible seaweeds and is often used as a thickener in foods and gels. “Why do I care about a thickener?” well you see, algae lack an immune system so they’ve developed these really elaborate chemical defense compounds against bacteria, viruses, and fungi. These compounds have been shown to be effective against infectious and pathogenic microbes, and show promising results fighting some human diseases.
So the key excitement with carrageenan being included in Defence Protection Glide is the protective properties it has, this ingredient can prevent this bind of HPV virions to cells, lowering your chances of getting the virus. This excites me for various reasons (including the link to cervical cancer that HPV has) there is an estimated 291 million women with a HPV infection at any time.
There’s believed to be a similar amount of men too and while most of these infections don’t cause noticeable symptoms persistent infections with some HPV strains can lead to cervical cancer or other anal/genital cancers+, so including carrageenan in a lube is such a genius move to try and protect us all against something so common within the communities but the ability to be so serious and life changing at the same time.

The Sexual Placebo Effect occurs when someone believes a product or treatment will satisfy them, without genuine improvement. The Sexual Placebo Effect can have radical and incredible effects due to how the mind operates.
Placebos, often mistaken for genuine treatments, largely drive the sexual placebo effect. A sugar pill, a placebo injection, or similar fake treatments exploit the key role of expectation in the placebo effect.
Strong belief in medication increases likelihood of perceived benefits, as individuals become more attuned to bodily changes.
Scientific Studies Of The Sexual Placebo Effect
Belief in medication heightens perceived benefits, making individuals more attuned to bodily changes and improvements. In the late 90s, scientists tested an anti-anxiety medication’s effectiveness and the placebo effect in a study. Now think of what this may mean to other types of health issues. We don’t have to sell sugar pills claiming magical results, but the sexual placebo effect has its place in retail.
Popular products that we sell like Herbal Viagra, Spanish Fly, Wildfire Massage Oils, Arousal Oils and Delay Sprays can all be heavily influenced and optimised by the placebo effect. The Sexual Placebo Effect will work on top of the benefits that the product already. Genuine recommendation and highlighting benefits of a sex toy can enhance customer experience and possibly improve product effects.
For example, I am about to sell some Herbal Viagra to a customer. Herbal Viagra’s effects vary among individuals, as I inform the man.
“Big Ben’s are an amazing Herbal Viagra and I have heard excellent feedback too”
Now, this statement is 100% true. Big Ben’s is a high selling sex product that a lot of people come back for. But could this statement that I use all the time be enough to induce a subconscious placebo effect which if it does then it will mean he well have a better experience and perform better sexually. He will benefit from the product and in turn lead to the customer coming back.
I personally believe that it doesn’t matter what the product is, if you say the right facts with confidence and you don’t bullshit then their is always a chance to effect anyone who walks away with a product with a placebo effect. Another amazing factor that can play a big part in The Sexual Placebo Effect and definitely one that I have personally experienced and I know a lot of you guys probably have as well is …….the price of an item.
Item Price Can Cause A Sexual Placebo Effect
Have you ever bought something super expensive and naturally biased yourself towards it due to your investment in it? Perfect example would be buying an apple product. Have you ever bought something super expensive and naturally biased yourself towards it due to your investment in it? It’s not just that they have amazing products but after spending $1300 on a new phone you kinda become attached to it.
I know for sure I defend myself for buying an outrageously expensive gadgets…. mainly because I don’t want to admit that I just spent $3000 on a new TV when I could’ve realistically bought a cheap car. So yes! You don’t need a placebo to actually get a placebo effect. It’s just amazing at what the brain can do and how it influences our body and experiences, and how much happier a customer can ultimately be after they buy a product.
Analysis of the Sexual Placebo Effect
Human beings are complex creatures, particularly when it comes to our sexual health and wellness. Our mental state, beliefs, and expectations can significantly influence our sexual experiences. One fascinating manifestation of this is the “sexual placebo effect”.
Before we delve into an analysis of the sexual placebo effect, let’s first comprehend the general concept of the placebo effect. The term “placebo effect” is commonly used within the medical and psychological realms to describe a phenomenon where individuals experience perceived improvements in their symptoms or condition despite receiving a treatment that is inert or has no therapeutic benefits. This effect often stems from an individual’s belief in the treatment’s effectiveness and their expectation of feeling better.
The Sexual Placebo Effect: An Overview
The sexual placebo effect is a specific application of the general placebo effect within the realm of sexual health and functioning. It occurs when a person experiences improvements in their sexual health, performance, or satisfaction after receiving a placebo treatment.
Like the broader placebo effect, the sexual placebo effect is primarily influenced by an individual’s expectations and beliefs about the treatment. For instance, if a person is given a sugar pill and told that it will enhance their sexual performance, they may indeed experience an improvement in their sexual functioning due to their belief in the pill’s efficacy.
Delving Deeper: The Science Behind the Sexual Placebo Effect
Several theories attempt to explain the intriguing phenomenon of the sexual placebo effect, but researchers have not fully understood its underlying mechanisms yet. These theories often revolve around the roles of psychological factors like expectancy, conditioning, and the individual’s perception of their symptoms.
Expectancy and the Power of Suggestion
One of the primary driving forces behind the sexual placebo effect is expectancy. When individuals expect a treatment to work, they are more likely to experience a placebo effect. This expectancy can be influenced by various factors, including the individual’s prior experiences, their beliefs about the treatment, and the information they receive about the treatment’s supposed benefits.
Conditioning and Behaviour Change
Another crucial factor in the sexual placebo effect is conditioning. Conditioning refers to the process of learning where certain stimuli or behaviours become associated with particular outcomes. In the context of the sexual placebo effect, individuals might associate taking a pill (even a placebo) with improved sexual performance. This association can then lead to a change in behaviour, such as increased motivation to engage in sexual activity, leading to enhanced sexual satisfaction.
Perception and Interpretation of Symptoms
The way individuals perceive and interpret their sexual symptoms can also play a role in the sexual placebo effect. For instance, a person who expects to feel better after taking a placebo might interpret mild sexual discomfort as mere arousal or interpret a decrease in sexual desire as a normal fluctuation rather than a symptom of a sexual dysfunction.
Sex Differences in the Sexual Placebo Effect
Interestingly, research suggests that there might be sex differences in the sexual placebo effect. These differences might be attributed to variations in psychological and physiological responses between males and females.
Males and the Sexual Placebo Effect
Studies suggest that men might be more susceptible to the sexual placebo effect, particularly when the placebo is presented with verbal information implying its efficacy. This susceptibility might be linked to males’ tendency to have higher expectations of treatment effectiveness. Additionally, men might experience stronger placebo-induced stress reduction, which could potentially enhance the sexual placebo effect.
Females and the Sexual Placebo Effect
On the other hand, women might be more prone to nocebo effects, which are essentially the negative counterpart of placebo effects. This means that women might more readily experience worsening sexual symptoms when given a placebo with negative implications
However, it’s worth noting that women can also experience the sexual placebo effect, especially when the placebo is administered through conditioning procedures. This might be due to women’s generally higher sensitivity to contextual and relational cues, which can play a significant role in conditioning.
Clinical Trials, Placebos, and the Sexual Placebo Effect
Clinical trials often use placebos as a control condition to assess the effectiveness of new treatments. These trials typically involve two groups: one that receives the active treatment and one that receives a placebo19. The participants typically don’t know whether they’re receiving the active treatment or the placebo.
Interestingly, placebo-controlled clinical trials for treatments of female sexual dysfunctions have often reported significant placebo effects. This might be due to the psychological factors involved in these conditions and the strong influence of expectations and beliefs on sexual functioning.
The Potential of the Sexual Placebo Effect
Despite the seemingly elusive nature of the sexual placebo effect, it holds potential value in enhancing sexual wellness. If harnessed correctly, the power of belief and expectancy can be utilised to improve sexual satisfaction and overall sexual health.
Enhancing Sexual Satisfaction
The sexual placebo effect can potentially enhance sexual satisfaction by creating positive expectations and reducing stress and anxiety associated with sexual activity. For instance, a person might derive more satisfaction from sexual activity after taking a placebo simply because they believe it will improve their performance.
Managing Sexual Dysfunction
The sexual placebo effect might also be useful in managing certain types of sexual dysfunction. Research suggests placebos can effectively treat erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation in men, and hypoactive sexual desire disorder in women.
A Personal Perspective: My Encounter with the Sexual Placebo Effect
To give you a more tangible understanding of the sexual placebo effect, I’ll share my personal experiences. It’s important to note that these experiences are purely anecdotal and might not reflect the experiences of others.

My First Experience
My first encounter with the sexual placebo effect happened a few years ago. I had been struggling with low sexual desire, which was causing friction in my relationship. I decided to try an over-the-counter supplement that was marketed as a natural libido enhancer.
An improvement in my sexual desire was noticeable within a week of starting the supplement. I felt more interested in sex, and my sexual encounters felt more satisfying. However, upon further research, I discovered that the supplement contained mostly vitamins and herbs with no scientifically proven libido-enhancing properties. Realising my increased sexual desire likely stemmed from the sexual placebo effect, influenced by belief in the supplement’s effectiveness.
Harnessing the Power of the Sexual Placebo Effect
After recognising the power of the sexual placebo effect, I decided to harness it to further improve my sexual wellness. I started using various strategies like positive affirmations and visualisation techniques to enhance my sexual experiences. For instance, before engaging in sexual activity, I would visualise myself enjoying the experience and feeling sexually fulfilled. Over time, these techniques seemed to improve my sexual satisfaction, likely due to the sexual placebo effect.
The Impact on My Relationship
The sexual placebo effect not only improved my sexual satisfaction but also had a positive impact on my relationship. My increased sexual desire and satisfaction led to more frequent and enjoyable sexual encounters, which strengthened the emotional bond with my partner.
Wrapping Up: The Power of Belief
The sexual placebo effect is a fascinating phenomenon that highlights the power of our beliefs and expectations in shaping our sexual experiences. Despite being a placebo, this effect can potentially enhance sexual satisfaction and help manage certain types of sexual dysfunction.
However, it’s crucial to note that the sexual placebo effect is not a substitute for professional medical advice or treatment. If you’re struggling with sexual health issues, it’s essential to seek help from a healthcare provider. They can provide accurate diagnoses and effective treatments tailored to your specific needs.
While the sexual placebo effect may not be a cure-all, it underscores the importance of a positive mindset in promoting sexual wellness. After all, as the saying goes, “Believing is half the healing.”

Common Prescriptions That Affect Sex
It’s easy to overlook how daily medications can influence your sex life. Many common prescriptions have direct effects on arousal, erection quality, and desire. Understanding which ones play a role helps you make more informed choices. Medications impacting sexual health are often prescribed for issues unrelated to sex, but the side effects are very real.
Antidepressants, especially SSRIs like fluoxetine or sertraline, are well-known for lowering libido and delaying orgasm. These drugs affect serotonin levels, which can reduce sexual interest or make it harder to climax. While they help many people manage anxiety or depression, they also make open communication with your doctor essential.
Blood pressure medications, particularly beta-blockers and some diuretics, can cause erection problems. These drugs reduce blood flow, which is critical for sexual function. Prostate medications like finasteride can also lower testosterone and reduce libido. Even allergy meds like antihistamines may cause temporary dryness or reduced sensitivity.
Not everyone reacts the same way. Two people on the same drug might have very different experiences. That’s why it’s important to track how you feel and notice any changes. Medications impacting sexual health don’t always require stopping treatment—but they do require awareness and honest discussion.
Recreational Substances and Libido
Not all sexual health issues come from prescriptions. Recreational substances—legal and illegal—can impact libido and performance in surprising ways. While some might feel like a short-term boost, the long-term effects are often less helpful. Understanding how these substances affect your body can help you make smarter choices in and out of the bedroom.
Alcohol is the most common. While a drink or two can lower inhibitions, heavy drinking interferes with arousal, erection quality, and orgasm. Long-term alcohol use may reduce testosterone and increase fatigue, which both lower sexual interest. It can also numb sensation, making sex less satisfying for some men.
Cannabis is another substance often associated with increased pleasure. In small amounts, it may help some men relax and feel more in tune with their bodies. But frequent use can reduce testosterone, lower sperm count, and delay ejaculation. Some also report reduced motivation and a drop in libido over time.
Other drugs like cocaine, MDMA, and opioids might seem to heighten arousal at first. But they can lead to reduced sensitivity, difficulty maintaining erections, or long-term sexual dysfunction. Even nicotine from smoking has been linked to poor blood flow, which directly impacts erections. Recreational substances can seem harmless in small doses, but their long-term effects on sexual health shouldn’t be ignored.
How to Manage Side Effects
If medications are affecting your sex life, that doesn’t always mean you have to stop taking them. There are often small changes that can ease the impact. The first step is knowing that you’re not alone—this is a common issue. Once you understand the link, you can start adjusting your routine with a little support and planning.
Talk to your doctor about possible alternatives or dosage changes. Some medications have versions with fewer sexual side effects. Others might be taken at a different time of day to reduce interference. Never stop or change medication on your own—this can be dangerous. A good doctor will help you find a balance that works for your body and your sex life.
Healthy habits can also support sexual function. Regular exercise improves blood flow and boosts mood. A good diet can support hormone production and reduce fatigue. Cutting back on alcohol, improving sleep, and managing stress also make a difference. These changes won’t solve everything, but they give your body a stronger foundation to work with.
Tracking symptoms can help too. If you notice patterns—like lower arousal after taking a certain medication—bring those notes to your doctor. Medications impacting sexual health can be adjusted, but only when you have the full picture. Being honest about how you’re feeling is a major step toward getting support.
Talking to Your Doctor About Sex – Medications Impacting Sexual Health
Many men avoid bringing up sex with their doctor. They feel embarrassed or think it’s not important enough to mention. But when you’re dealing with medications impacting sexual health, silence only makes things worse. Your doctor can’t help with a problem they don’t know exists. These conversations matter more than most people realise.
You don’t need to go into graphic detail. Start with something simple like, “I’ve noticed a drop in sex drive since starting this medication.” Or, “I’m having trouble with erections and I think it might be related to my meds.” These are normal concerns, and your doctor has heard them before. You won’t be judged for speaking up.
If the conversation isn’t taken seriously, that’s a red flag. You have every right to ask for alternatives, second opinions, or referrals to specialists. It’s your body—and your pleasure and confidence are just as important as managing other health symptoms.
Preparing a short list of questions helps too. Ask what the sexual side effects are, how long they usually last, and if any alternatives exist. If you’re considering recreational substances, be honest about that as well. Full transparency gives your doctor the best chance to help you protect your health while keeping your sex life intact.
Sexual Health Boosters That May Help
Sometimes the best way to handle side effects is to give your body some extra support. While these products won’t replace medical treatment, they can help counter some of the drop in libido, sensitivity, or performance caused by medications. When used carefully, they offer a boost without heavy pressure or long-term risks.
Topical enhancers and performance gels work by increasing blood flow or stimulating nerve endings. They’re fast-acting and easy to use, making them ideal for men who want something that feels natural and immediate. For men affected by medications impacting sexual health, these products can offer a short-term lift while longer-term plans are being sorted out.
Sensuva ON Sex Drive Performance Maximizer Gel for Him
This gel is made with natural oils that boost blood flow and sensitivity. It’s applied directly to the penis and takes effect within minutes. For men noticing a drop in arousal due to meds, this can help bring sensation and desire back into focus. It’s discreet, easy to use, and doesn’t rely on systemic changes.

HOT V-Activ Penis Power Enhancer Cream
This European-made cream helps support firmer, longer-lasting erections. It combines warming and circulation-enhancing ingredients that respond well even if your libido has taken a hit. Many men find it useful when medication side effects dull their usual response. It’s a simple way to push back against unwanted changes.
Used responsibly, these products can help rebuild confidence and performance. They’re not magic, but they’re a useful part of the toolkit when dealing with sexual side effects from medications.

Questions Men Ask About Medication and Sex
Do all antidepressants cause sexual side effects?
No, not all do—but SSRIs are the most likely to cause issues like low libido or delayed ejaculation. Other types, like bupropion, may have fewer side effects. Talk to your doctor about switching if your current medication is affecting your sex life.
Can I stop my medication if it’s affecting my sex drive?
No—never stop or adjust medication without medical advice. Abrupt changes can be dangerous. Instead, speak to your doctor about alternative medications or lifestyle strategies that could reduce the sexual side effects while keeping your treatment safe.
Does alcohol always reduce sexual performance?
It depends on the amount. A small amount might lower anxiety and increase confidence. But drinking too much can delay orgasm, reduce sensitivity, and make it harder to get or keep an erection. Long-term use has even stronger negative effects.
Are natural libido boosters safe to use with prescriptions?
Some are safe, but others can interact with medications. Always check the ingredient list and ask your doctor before starting anything new. If you’re on medication, even herbal or over-the-counter products need to be handled with care.
What should I do if my doctor dismisses my concerns?
Get a second opinion. You deserve to be taken seriously. A good provider will listen and work with you to find solutions. If they ignore or downplay the impact medications are having on your sex life, it’s time to look for a doctor who respects your concerns.
Take Control of Your Sexual Health – Medications Impacting Sexual Health
Medications impacting sexual health are more common than most people realise—but they don’t have to take over your sex life. With the right knowledge and communication, most issues can be managed or improved. You’re not stuck, and you’re not alone in this.
Stay informed about what you’re taking and how it affects your body. Speak up when things don’t feel right. Try supportive tools when needed. Each small step builds confidence, and that confidence carries into the bedroom.
Being sexually healthy doesn’t just mean having sex—it means feeling good, staying connected, and knowing how to care for your body and pleasure. Keep the conversation going, and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it.
