Low Libido

12 Causes of Low Libido – How To Prevent Libido Loss

This afternoon at Adult Smart in Kogarah, a women came in with some questions regarding medication resulting low libido. She was quite concerned and was seeking advice on whether this was normal and what you can do to prevent this from happening.

We talked for a while about sexual dysfunction and the causes of this as well as bonding over similar experiences. Having taken medication that affected my libido previously, I empathised with the woman’s frustration.  So I took to the internet and did some research on the medication this lady was taking, as well as other causes for sexual dysfunction.

A sexual dysfunction or sexual disorder refers to experiencing difficulty during any phase of the sexual response cycle that prevents an individual from experiencing desire, physical pleasure, arousal or achieving orgasm.  HealthDirect Australia says that 30% (!!!) of all women have difficulty reaching orgasm. This issue links to various factors, including ones I’ve mentioned before like certain birth controls (e.g., the pill, Implanon), and simple causes like stress. There are a number of Physical, as well as Psychological Causes of Loss of Libido in women.

Physical Causes:

Vaginal Dryness: The number one cause of Sexual Dysfunction is improper lubrication or the inability to self lubricate. You can naturally enhance your ability to self lubricate by eating foods that are rich in estrogen. Foods like trail nuts, dried fruits, flax seeds, beans, tofu, soy milk, and salmon are high in (o)estrogen. In the mean time, don’t be afraid to grab a bottle of SuperSlyde!

– Depression

– Anxiety

– Medications for Depression & Anxiety

– Other medications like contraception and antibiotics

Psychological Causes Of Low Libido

Stress

From being stressed at work, to carrying the world on your shoulders every day it’s no wonder you’re having trouble unwinding and concentrating on yourself during sex. Once you convince yourself that achieving an orgasm is impossible, escaping this mindset becomes very difficult. Try have a cup of green tea, or a bath, or even getting a massage from your partner.

Mental illness

having a mental illness can distort the way you are thinking with your physical response. Convincing yourself that achieving an orgasm is impossible makes escaping this mindset very difficult. An option that you could consider is seeking advice from a sex therapist/sexologist.

Emotional, Physical or Psychological Sexual Abuse

You should consider seeking counselling if you’re experiencing traumatic stress. The emotional toll of a traumatic event can cause life long emotions that can make day to day life frightening – if you’re experiencing traumatic stress you can call helplines 24/7 to help (Ph: 1800 18 7263 Australia) or visit BeyondBlue.

History of Poor Relationships

Closely linked to the above as well as the fear of the relationship or experience turning out the same as previous relationships.

Substance Abuse

Any substance that changes your state of mind can effect your sexual response.

Emotional Response

A females emotional response to the ability to orgasm is also a massive factor contributing towards Sexual Dysfunction. How frustrating – it’s like a never ending circle!

Inability to relax – Refer to #1

Treatment of Sexual Dysfunction often combines medical and psychological approaches. If you are on medication that is affecting your libido, contact your doctor and ask for a review of your medication. You can ask to change doses or change medications completely if you so wish.

If you experience depression, anxiety, or traumatic stress, we highly recommend seeking professional advice. More often than not, behavioural approaches that promote an attitude shift, encourage relaxation and reduce stress will be recommended. Try increasing the amount you exercise, or do more things that help you to relax and make you feel good like taking a bath or listening to a certain type of music.

A Guide to Naturally Boosting Your Low Libido

Libido, often referred to as sex drive, is a key aspect of our overall well-being. It’s not just about sexual satisfaction; it interlinks with our mental health, self-esteem, and intimate relationships. However, many of us experience stages of low libido due to various factors such as stress, aging, hormonal imbalance, or certain medical conditions. Yet, the good news is, several natural strategies can help you reignite your passion. Let’s delve into some of the best ways to naturally increase your libido.

Understanding Libido

What is Libido?

Libido is our innate sexual desire or drive –  a complex interplay of biological, psychological, and social factors. It’s worth mentioning that everyone’s libido varies and changes over time. It is completely normal to experience peaks and troughs in your sexual desire.

Factors Affecting Libido

Several factors can contribute to changes in libido. These include:

– Age: As we age, changes in hormone levels can lead to a decrease in libido.
– Stress: High-stress levels can significantly affect your sex drive.
– Relationship Issues: Emotional disconnect or unresolved conflicts can dampen your desire for intimacy.
– Medical Conditions: Certain health conditions, including diabetes, heart disease, or hormonal imbalances, can cause a decrease in sexual desire.
– Medications: Some medications, especially antidepressants, can impact your libido.
– Lifestyle Habits: Unhealthy habits like smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and lack of exercise can also lead to a lower sex drive.

Natural Ways to Boost Your Libido

Lifestyle Modifications

Regular Exercise

Regular physical activity can have a profound impact on boosting your libido. Exercise helps release endorphins, the body’s natural mood lifters, and it can enhance your stamina and body image, all contributing to a healthier sex drive.

Stress Management

Chronic stress can take a toll on your libido. Incorporating stress management techniques, such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, yoga, or even simple hobbies that relax and distract you, can help manage your stress levels and improve your libido.

Quality Sleep

Adequate sleep is vital for maintaining a healthy sex drive. Lack of sleep can lead to increased stress levels and hormonal imbalance, both of which can hamper your libido.

Healthy Diet

Consuming a well-balanced diet is key to maintaining overall health, including your sexual health. Certain foods are believed to enhance libido and boost your sex drive.

Foods to Enhance Libido

Maca Root

Maca root, a root vegetable native to Peru, has been used for centuries to enhance fertility and sex drive. Studies indicate that maca can improve sexual desire and reduce erectile dysfunction.

Dark chocolate is known for its mood-enhancing benefits. It releases serotonin, a neurotransmitter that can induce feelings of happiness and relaxation. Plus, it’s a sensual food to boot!

Oysters

Oysters are often considered a natural aphrodisiac. They’re packed with zinc, a mineral essential for testosterone production and maintenance, thus, enhancing your sex drive.

Red Ginseng

Red ginseng has been used in traditional medicine for its potential to improve sexual function and desire. It’s believed to have a positive impact on the production of nitric oxide, a compound that enhances blood flow, crucial for sexual function.

Watermelon

Watermelon is rich in phytonutrients known to relax blood vessels and increase blood flow, mirroring the effects of erectile dysfunction medications.

Supplements to Boost Libido

Tribulus Terrestris

Tribulus Terrestris is a herb used in traditional medicine known to boost libido and improve sexual function.

Fenugreek

While it’s normal for your libido to fluctuate, significant or persistent decrease in your sex drive can affect your self-esteem and your relationships. Thankfully, numerous natural strategies can help boost your libido. However, it’s essential to remember that everyone is different, and what works for one person might not work for another. If you’re concerned about your libido, don’t hesitate to seek help from a healthcare professional. It’s all about finding the right solution to help you enjoy a satisfying and fulfilling sexual life.
